After two weeks singing about jack-o-lanterns with my preschoolers, you’d better believe I know the Hungarian word for “pumpkin” (tök). Maybe that’s why vegan eatery Tökmag (pumpkin seed) first caught my eye.
This was my first excursion into the vegan world of Budapest, and after my experience, I’ll hold vegan food to a very high standard. The Tökmag website claims that their food holds the “perfect harmony of flavors”, and I can’t disagree. My juicy beet burger with its red wine jam and side of potato chips rocketed straight into the category of comfort food. At 1740 Ft ($6.58), the meal filled my belly without breaking the bank. And come to think of it, the beet burger was a seasonal offering, so my second visit had better happen quickly! And although I left too stuffed to eat another bite, there are plenty of other dishes I wanted to try (mushroom burger, I’m looking at you).Seats inside are spare, but rest assured, any wait is worth it. Simple and filling, Tökmag and it’s vegan fare will be seeing me again very soon.
