I’ve taken countless trips since I first moved to Budapest in 2017, so I have plenty to tell you. If it’s your first time in Budapest and you want to know how to get from the Budapest airport to the Budapest city center, let’s explore your options!
About the Budapest Airport
Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD), located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of the city center, has several transportation options for different preferences and budgets.The airport has two terminals (most of the budget airline flights such as RyanAir, WizzAir, EasyJet, etc. fly out of Terminal 2). If you like to travel in style, you can book a spot in the elite airport lounge to unwind before your flight.
1. Public Transportation
Public transport is the most budget-friendly option to get to Liszt Ferenc Airport, and Budapest’s public transport system is easy to navigate.
Bus 100E (Budapest Airport Shuttle Bus):
I would suggest this as the #1 cost-effective and time-effective way to get to and from the Budapest airport. This express bus runs directly from the airport to the city center, stopping at key locations such as Kálvin tér, Astoria, and Deák Ferenc tér. It takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on traffic. On the way back, it drops you off at Budapest Airport Terminal 2.
Cost: The Budapest Airport Shuttle Bus requires its own special ticket, which is 2200 HUF (~$6). You can buy this at one of the purple ticket machines, on the Budapest GO app, or onboard the bus via credit card.
Tip: If you’re going from the city center to the airport during peak times, I’d suggest boarding at Deák Ferenc tér. Sometimes the bus is so full that it won’t stop at the following stations.
Bus 200E: Runs from the airport to Kőbánya-Kispest metro station (Metro Line 3), from where you can take the metro to the city center.
How to use:
- Purchase a ticket from the BKK (Budapest Public Transport) vending machines at the airport or use the BKK app.
- Validate your ticket on board the bus or before entering the metro station.
Pros:
- Very economical (single tickets are affordable).
- Frequent services.
Cons:
- Can get crowded, especially during peak hours (you might have to wait for the next bus).
- Requires handling your own luggage.
b. Night Buses: If you arrive late, night buses like the 900 and 950/950A can connect you to the night metro service.
2. Airport Shuttle Service
One of the most convenient options is the airport shuttle service, specifically the miniBUD shuttle. This door-to-door minibus service operates 24/7, making it a reliable choice regardless of your flight time.
Cost: Tickets start from 5,890 HUF (~$15).
How to use:
- Book online in advance or at the BUD airport.
- Shared rides are available, which can be more economical.
- Private transfers can be booked for a more exclusive experience.
Pros:
- Direct drop-off at your accommodation.
- Fixed price.
- Available at all hours.
Cons:
- Shared rides might take longer due to multiple stops.
- Slightly more expensive than public transport.
3. Taxi
If you prefer comfort and speed (or if you’re running late as I so often do, haha), taking a taxi is one of the most straightforward transfer options.
Cost: Of course, the cost fluctuates based on time and availability, but on average, taxi services from the Budapest airport to the city center cost around 15,000 HUF (~$40).
- Use the official taxi company Főtaxi, which has a stand right outside the arrivals terminal.
- Alternatively, you can use ride sharing apps like Bolt or Uber.
Pros:
- Direct and comfortable.
- Faster than public transport.
Cons:
- More expensive than other options.
- Potential for traffic delays during rush hour.
4. Train
The train is another cheap option to get to and from the Budapest airport, although it will take you extra time (I don’t recommend it if you’re in a rush). The train does not go directly to the Budapest airport, so you’ll need to pair it with the bus. ou’ll need to buy a single-use ticket for the bus and then a train ticket. This route can take anywhere from 40-60 minutes depending on if the train and bus schedules match up. You’ll arrive at Nyugati railway station.
Route:
- Take bus 200E to Ferihegy train station (Ferihegy vasutallomas).
- From there, catch a train to Nyugati Railway Station in the city center.
Pros:
- Scenic and relaxing, more space for luggage.
- Avoids city traffic.
Cons:
- Not the most direct route.
- Less frequent services compared to buses and taxis.
