Budapest is already enough of a fairy tale (I mean, have you seen the Fisherman’s Bastion?), but in the winter there’s an extra layer of enchantment. From Christmas markets to thermal spas to delectable foods that keep you warm, there are plenty of winter activities in Budapest. If you find yourself in Budapest during the winter months, here are some things you must experience in Budapest during wintertime.
Christmas Markets*
Budapest knows what it’s doing when it comes to Christmas markets. In fact, did you know that the Basilica Market was voted Best Christmas Market in 2020? While you can find charming pop-up stands and mini markets across the city, there are two which are the shining stars: Vörösmarty Tér Marketand the St. Stephen’s Basilica Market. Both will have all of the market classics, from mulled wine to lángos to souvenirs. I love the Basilica Market for its central ice rink and the cheerful light show projected onto the Basilica every hour.
You can even make a little loop! From Deák Ferenc Square, walk down the masterfully lit Fashion Street, into Vörösmarty Square Market, and then over to the Basilica. If you’re walking in the city center definitely make this little Christmas market tour part of your Budapest winter itinerary.
*As of 2021, proof of vaccination and ID are required for entry
City Park Ice Rink
You could spend ages in Budapest’s City Park (there’s a Turkish bath, a castle, and a circus there, for starters). However, I think the most magical activity is going to one of the largest ice skating rinks in Europe. In the winter, the city freezes over the giant lake (great for boating in the summer) and you can twirl around in the shadow of the impressive Vajdahunyad Castle! Does it get more picturesque? I think not. This outdoor ice rink really has it all. Go put on your blades and bask in the 19th Century charm!

Christmas Tram
There is nothing–n o t h i n g–that fills me with more Christmas glee than catching a Budapest Christmas tram. I saw my first one the other day and literally squealed out loud! During the winter months, the city dresses up some of its trams, buses, and trolleys. Hopping on one can make for a festive ride throughout the city. The #2 is one such tram, and it goes down the Danube river in an already picturesque route. If you’d like, the timetable and vehicle numbers are all here. But if you’d rather be surprised, make sure you keep your eyes open!
Spas and Thermal Baths
If you need a break from all of your Budapest Christmas activities, you can treat yourself to a spa day. The Széchenyi Baths is one of the most famous buildings in Budapest, and it’s no wonder: the beautiful yellow arcades of this Turkish bath are quite striking. Split your time between the indoor pools and the heated pools outside, where you can watch the steam rise off of the warm waters. Maybe go inside to the sauna–why not? You deserve it!
Aside from Széchenyi Baths, Gellért Baths and Rudas Baths are two other iconic thermal spas to try. Spend an afternoon rejuvenating in the thermal waters of the outdoor pools!
Winter Food and Drink
Of course, with the cold winter weather we could all use a little extra padding. All the more reason to take advantage of hearty Hungarian cuisine!
To drink, you can’t go wrong with forralt bor (mulled wine) or forró csoki (hot chocolate). However, I’d suggest getting yours from an actual cafe or restaurant. The ones you see at the markets have been simmering all day long. For a snack, munch on roasted chestnuts or a classic chimney cake (classic toppings are cinnamon, cocoa, walnut, or coconut. And bonus–a Hungarian chimney cake will keep your hands warm!) If you’re looking for a hearty meal, dive into a plate of pörkölt–a thick Hungarian beef stew, served with a side of homemade noodles.
And of course, you can always warm up and enjoy some Hungarian wine in one of my favorite cozy wine bars!

There’s absolutely no shame if you’d like to spend a little time inside during these colder months. If you’re into puzzles, perhaps try an escape room (I can’t get enough of these interactive and immersive games!). Or, if you’re looking for something more physical, you can channel your inner lumberjack and go axe throwing! Finally, if you’d like to be a superstar for a night, themed private karaoke rooms will provide a stage!
Make Donations
Speaking of staying warm, you may have some gently used or pre-loved winter coats/items. If you’d like to pass them on to others in need, I wrote this article on where you can make donations in Budapest.
Are you familiar with Operation Christmas Child? There’s a familiar initiative here called Cipősdoboz Akció. You can fill up a shoebox with gifts for a child, and then leave it at one of the many drop off points in the city. Find more details here!
